Frederick William IV's election as German Emperor never happened. The Frankfurt Parliament offered him the imperial crown in April 1849, and he refused it — famously dismissing it as a "crown from the gutter," unwilling to accept imperial authority from a revolutionary assembly rather than from the German princes. This pattern was struck in anticipation of an acceptance that never came.
