Obverse description Within a tressure or enclosed garden, a lion sejant facing sinister occupies the central field, holding before it a quartered shield displaying the arms of Bavaria-Hainaut. The lion is rendered in the Gothic manner characteristic of Netherlandish hammered coinage of the early fifteenth century. The peripheral legend, in Gothic lettering, encircles the central device and identifies the issuing authority. The overall composition reflects the heraldic conventions standard to the comital coinage of Hainaut under William IV.
