Additional information

William IV ruled Hainaut, Holland, and Zeeland simultaneously, and the administrative strain of managing three counties from the Low Countries eventually contributed to his mental breakdown — he was declared incapable of governing in 1417 and confined until his death in 1418, which is precisely why this issue's production window closes that year. The Thuyne type takes its name from the distinctive enclosure motif, a design choice that circulated widely across the southern Low Countries trade networks where Hainaut groats were broadly accepted alongside Flemish issues.
