The composite shield is set within a raised inner circle surrounded by a beaded border. The circumferential legend in Gothic uncial script reads: ✠ PHS ⁑ DEI ⁑ GRA ⁑ DVX ⁑ BVRG ⁑ COMES ⁑ HANONIE, identifying Philip, by God's grace Duke of Burgundy and Count of Hainaut. The coin is struck on an irregular flan typical of mid-15th-century hammered billon coinage. |
