| Description de l’avers | Central field dominated by a long cross whose arms terminate in trefoils (rosettes), dividing the design into four quarters. The upper-left and lower-right quarters each bear the quartered arms of Burgundy-Flanders (per pale, the dexter showing the arms of Burgundy ancient and modern, the sinister the lion of Flanders), while the upper-right and lower-left quarters display the crowned lion passant of Brabant on a plain shield. A crown surmounts the intersection of the cross at the top of the inner field. The surrounding circular legend in Gothic uncial lettering reads: ✠ PhS : DVX : BORG : Z : COM : FLAND` : IOH : DVC : BRAB., proclaiming Philip as Duke of Burgundy and Count of Flanders, and Johanna as Duchess of Brabant. The coin is struck within a beaded inner circle and an irregular outer border typical of hammered billon coinage of the late fourteenth century. |
