Philip the Bold acquired Flanders through his marriage to Margaret III in 1369, and the county's mint administration became a proving ground for the monetary reforms he would later extend across his growing Burgundian territories. The "Jangelaar" name — a Flemish vernacular term referencing the coin's jingling sound — reflects how thoroughly these issues circulated among ordinary users rather than being hoarded as bullion.
The billon standard adopted here placed this denomination below the prestige silver issues while keeping it above pure copper token coinage, filling a gap in daily exchange that Flemish merchants had long complained about.
