Obverse description A displayed eagle stands centrally in the field, its wings spread heraldically, perched atop two escutcheons — the arms of Burgundy and Flanders — tilted inward and leaning against one another. The design is executed in the bold, stylised Gothic manner typical of Burgundian Low Countries coinage of the late 14th century. The entire device is enclosed within a double beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend in Gothic uncial letters reads: PHILIPP ⋮ DEI ⋮ GRA ⋮ DVX ⋮ BVRG ⋮ Z ⋮ COM ⋮ FLAND, proclaiming Philip as Duke of Burgundy and Count of Flanders by the grace of God.
