The legend reads the full titulature of Landgrave Charles I of Hesse-Cassel, beginning with CAROLI / PRIMI at the top and continuing through his titles as Landgrave of Hesse, Prince of Hersfeld, Count of Katzenelnbogen, Diez, Ziegenhain, Nidda, and Schaumburg. Below the titulature the inscription MONETA PRIMA AVREA identifies the piece as a gold coin of the first type, followed by ÆDERÆ AVRIFLVÆ, denoting its association with the Eder River gold.
