Ferdinand of Bavaria was appointed Prince-Bishop of Liège in 1612 through the direct intervention of his brother Maximilian I, Duke of Bavaria, who was consolidating Wittelsbach ecclesiastical influence across the Holy Roman Empire. Ferdinand would go on to hold Liège alongside the Prince-Archbishopric of Cologne and three other sees simultaneously — an accumulation of benefices that made him one of the most politically powerful churchmen in the Empire.
The double florin was already an uncommon denomination for Liège, and 1613 production appears to have been limited. Delmonte's rarity rating for this type reflects genuine scarcity rather than collector fashion.
