| Obverse description | The obverse design, common to all eurozone member states issuing this commemorative, depicts the Treaty of Rome document superimposed upon a stylised rendering of the travertine paving of the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, as designed by Michelangelo, referencing the site of the treaty's signing on 25 March 1957. The legend RÖMISCHE VERTRÄGE 50 JAHRE, the inscription EUROPA, the year 2007, the mint mark D, and the issuer name BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND are inscribed in the field and along the inner border in the German language. The design was selected through a pan-European competition organised by the European mints to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the treaty that established the European Economic Community. The outer ring of the bimetallic coin bears the twelve stars of the European Union arranged in a circle. |
