Beschrijving voorzijde The inner circle of the coin features a bold central design comprising the Venus symbol (the universal symbol for womanhood), overlaid with a stylised pencil or pen casting diagonal lines across a square background, evoking the act of marking a ballot — a direct reference to women's universal suffrage. To the lower left of the central motif, the inscription '75 JAAR ANS' denotes the 75th anniversary of women's full voting rights in Belgium, enacted in 1948. The country code 'BE' and the date '2023' appear to the right of the central design, accompanied by the engraver's initials 'IB' (Iris Bruijns) and the Royal Belgian Mint mark. The outer ring bears the bilingual legend 'ALGEMEEN VROUWENKIESRECHT' (upper arc) and 'SUFFRAGE UNIVERSEL FÉMININ' (lower arc), framed by the twelve stars of the European Union.

Beschrijving keerzijde The standard European common reverse, designed by Luc Luycx, features the large numeral '2' occupying the left portion of the inner field, set against a globe-like relief background. To the right, a relief map of the European Union is depicted, rendered in fine detail with national borders visible. The denomination 'EURO' is inscribed to the right of the map. The outer ring displays the twelve stars of the European Union evenly spaced around the circumference, and the engraver's initials 'LL' appear below the map.

Aanvullende informatie

Belgium granted women the right to vote in national elections in 1948 — nearly three decades after many neighboring countries, and only after sustained pressure from Catholic women's organizations whose political loyalty the Christian Social Party was unwilling to lose. The delay was largely strategic rather than principled.

This commemorative was issued under the authority of King Philippe, whose reign began in 2013.
