Issued as part of Spain's ongoing UNESCO World Heritage Sites commemorative program, this coin marks the Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba — a structure whose layered identity reflects nearly thirteen centuries of occupation, conversion, and contested ownership. The building was a Visigothic church before the Umayyad conquest, then the Great Mosque of Córdoba under Abd al-Rahman I from 785, then partially demolished and rebuilt as a Catholic cathedral after Fernando III's reconquest in 1236. The Spanish government's 2015 refusal to allow Islamic prayer within the building remains a live political controversy.
