Slovenia issued this coin to mark the 250th anniversary of the Ljubljana Botanical Garden, founded in 1760 by Giovanni Antonio Scopoli — the Italian-born naturalist who spent years in Idrija cataloguing the region's flora while employed by the Habsburg mercury mining administration. The garden is the oldest scientific institution in Slovenia still operating on its original site.
Scopoli's foundational plant collections there underpinned his 1760 work Flora Carniolica, one of the first systematic botanical surveys of the eastern Alpine region.
