| Descrizione del dritto | The obverse features a right-facing portrait effigy of the celebrated Greek poet Kostis Palamas (1859–1943), rendered in high relief against a plain field. The legend ΚΩΣΤΗΣ ΠΑΛΑΜΑΣ arcs above or around the portrait, with the inscription ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ identifying the issuing state. The year of issue, 2018, appears within the design. The engraver's initials or signature of Geórgios Stamatópoulos are incorporated into the field. The twelve stars of the European Union encircle the inner disc, a standard feature of Greek euro coinage. |

Kostis Palamas was the poet whose words, set to music by Spyridon Samaras, became the Olympic Hymn — first performed at the revival of the Athens Games in 1896 and formally adopted by the IOC as the official anthem in 1958. This coin marks the 150th anniversary of his birth. When Palamas died in February 1943, Athens was under Axis occupation; his funeral drew tens of thousands into the streets in an act of open defiance, mourners spontaneously singing the national anthem despite the German presence.
