Obverse description Effigy of King Juan Carlos I of Spain rendered in high relief, depicted as a right-facing truncated bust wearing a suit and tie, with naturalistic portraiture capturing the monarch's mature features and wavy hair. The legend ESPAÑA arcs along the upper left field of the inner disk, while the mint mark — a crowned M denoting the Royal Mint of Madrid — appears at the lower left. The issue year is inscribed at the base of the inner disk, flanked by stars, with the date split on either side of a central star in the copper-nickel outer ring. Twelve stars of the European Union are distributed around the outer ring, symbolising European unity.

Reverse description The common reverse design for the 2 Euro denomination features a large numeral '2' occupying the left portion of the inner disk, rendered in a bold, stylised typeface. To the right, a revised cartographic representation of Europe — the so-called second map design introduced in 2007, depicting the European Union in its expanded configuration including Eastern European member states — is shown in relief against a stippled background. The word 'EURO' is inscribed horizontally across the lower centre of the map, with the engraver's initials 'LL' (Luc Luycx) visible at the lower right of the inner disk. The outer copper-nickel ring bears twelve raised stars of the European Union.
