Issued to mark the 25th anniversary of Grand Duke Henri's accession as hereditary prince in 1981 — not his ascension to the throne, which came in 2000 when his father Jean abdicated. Luxembourg's royal commemoratives of this period frequently blurred that distinction in their official communications, which caused minor controversy among collectors and protocol observers at the time.
