Additional information

Luxembourg's 2014 commemorative marks the 175th anniversary of the country's independence, formalized following the 1839 Treaty of London, which stripped Luxembourg of more than half its territory — the French-speaking western portion that became the Belgian province of Luxembourg. What remained was smaller but fully sovereign, with Henri I of the House of Nassau-Weilburg as its first Grand Duke under the new arrangement. The anniversary thus commemorates not a triumphant founding moment but a territorial partition accepted under great-power pressure.
