The Erasmus Programme commemorative was issued to mark the 35th anniversary of the scheme, which launched in 1987 and took its name from the Dutch humanist scholar who studied across multiple European cities in the late 15th century. Cyprus joined the programme following its EU accession in 2004. All eurozone members were invited to issue a common commemorative design for this anniversary, making 2022 one of the more crowded years for €2 commemoratives in the series — over a dozen member states issued identical or near-identical reverses simultaneously under the joint issue framework.
