Spain's 2015 commemorative program sparked immediate political controversy. The Catalan regional government had lobbied Madrid to issue a coin honoring Catalonia just as the independence movement was reaching a peak — the September 2015 Catalan parliamentary elections were effectively framed by separatist parties as a proxy referendum. The central government's decision to proceed with the issue was read by some as a conciliatory gesture, by others as an attempt to absorb nationalist sentiment into official state symbolism.
It sold out quickly through the Royal Mint's collector channels, seeing little actual circulation.
