Aversbeschreibung The gold-colored bimetallic center depicts a stylized field of five-pointed stars of varying sizes, evoking the flag motif associated with the Catalan independence movement (the Estelada), with the lower portion of the center showing a partial rendering of the Senyera's vertical stripes. The outer copper-nickel ring bears twelve five-pointed stars in relief, referencing the standard European Union coinage design. The legend CATALUNYA is inscribed along the upper arc of the ring, while NOU ESTEL A EUROPA curves through the upper field of the center disc. The date 2015 appears at the base of the outer ring, flanked by stars.

Zusätzliche Informationen

Spain's 2015 commemorative program sparked immediate political controversy. The Catalan regional government had lobbied Madrid to issue a coin honoring Catalonia just as the independence movement was reaching a peak — the September 2015 Catalan parliamentary elections were effectively framed by separatist parties as a proxy referendum. The central government's decision to proceed with the issue was read by some as a conciliatory gesture, by others as an attempt to absorb nationalist sentiment into official state symbolism.

It sold out quickly through the Royal Mint's collector channels, seeing little actual circulation.
