The effigy occupies the bimetallic centre. The date of birth '16. APRIL. 1927' appears to the right of the portrait, and the year '2012' to the left. The outer ring bears the circumferential legend 'COMPLEANNO PAPA BENEDETTO XVI' at the top and 'CIVITAS VATICANA' at the bottom, separated by two small star stops.

Additional information

Vatican 2 euro issues are produced under a special agreement between the Holy See and the European Union — the Vatican is not an EU member state, yet is permitted to strike euro-denominated coinage. Annual mintages are tightly capped, and 2012 fell during the sede vacante run-up: Benedict XVI was still reigning but would resign in February 2013, the first papal abdication since Gregory XII in 1415. Collector demand for his final full-year issue pushed distribution almost entirely into sets rather than circulation.
