| Opis awersu | The obverse design is divided into two halves: the left half features the large numeral '2' with the date 1998 inscribed to its left and the arms of Schiedam — a crowned shield — depicted below, with the legend SCHIEDAM running vertically along the lower left rim. The right half presents a detailed rendering of two of Schiedam's iconic tall grain windmills, with the denomination '½ EURO' inscribed across the mill tower in the field. The mint master's privy mark appears to the lower left of the numeral. The overall composition is rendered in a bold, graphic style characteristic of late 20th-century Dutch commemorative issues. |

Schiedam's "3 Koornbloemen" distillery was one of the last survivors of a jenever industry that once defined the city — at its 19th-century peak, Schiedam operated over 400 distilleries, making it the gin capital of the world by volume. This 2½ euro piece was issued under the Dutch municipal coin program that briefly allowed cities to produce legal-tender collector issues tied to local heritage, a short-lived experiment that ended before the euro changeover rendered the entire series obsolete.
