The Ċittadella — the walled citadel crowning the high ground above Victoria — has served as Gozo's refuge citadel since antiquity, but its modern profile owes much to a 1551 Ottoman raid that carried off nearly the entire population of the island into slavery. The trauma drove subsequent reconstruction of the fortifications under the Knights of St John, and for generations Gozitans were legally required to sleep within the walls at night.
Malta's 2 euro commemorative program has steadily documented the archipelago's distinct sites and history. This is only the second coin in the series dedicated specifically to Gozo.
