Obverse description Central field features the crowned quartered shield of Spain, displaying the arms of Castile (castle) and León (lion) in opposing quarters, with the base-point bearing the pomegranate of Granada, all surmounted by a large royal crown. Six-petalled floral ornaments (trefoils or lis) flank the shield at left and right in the field. The circumferential legend in Latin capital letters reads PHILIPVS V DEI GRAT, separated by pellet stops, attributing the coin to King Philip V by the grace of God. The outer border is formed by a toothed or beaded rim typical of early milled Spanish coinage.

Reverse description Central design features a bold cross pattée set within a quadrilobe (quatrefoil) frame, dividing the field into four compartments. The four cantons carry, reading clockwise from upper left, the date (1704), the mint mark S (Seville), the denomination numeral 2, and the assayer initial P. The circumferential legend HISPANIARUM REX, identifying the monarch as King of the Spains, runs around the periphery in Latin capital letters with pellet stops. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle and a toothed outer rim consistent with early eighteenth-century milled Spanish gold coinage.
