Regensburg's 1627 ducat issue commemorates the centennial of the city's Trinity Church (Dreieinigkeitskirche), construction of which began in 1627 — a pointed act of Lutheran civic pride at a moment of acute confessional danger. The Thirty Years' War was already nine years old, and Imperial Catholic forces under Tilly had recently devastated Protestant strongholds across the Empire.
