2 Ducats - Karol X Gustaw Swedish Occupation

Elbing — modern Elbląg in northern Poland — was a prosperous Hanseatic trading city that passed under Swedish control during the First Northern War, and these ducats were struck under the authority of Karl X Gustav as the city's occupying sovereign. The Swedish crown permitted Elbing to continue municipal coinage partly as a practical concession to local commerce and partly to signal administrative continuity to a merchant class whose cooperation mattered far more than their loyalty.

Kopicki distinguishes at least two die varieties across this issue, catalogued separately as 9684 and 9687. The six-year emission window reflects the full duration of Swedish control before the city's return to Polish suzerainty under the Treaty of Oliva in 1660.
