Additional information

Ferdinand of Bavaria held the bishopric of Münster from 1612 until his death in 1650, simultaneously accumulating five other ecclesiastical offices including the Archbishopric of Cologne — a concentration of benefices that made him one of the most politically consequential prelates in the Empire. The 1647 date places this klippe squarely within the final negotiations of the Westphalian peace process, with Münster itself serving as one of the two congress cities where the treaties were being hammered out.

Klippe formats in gold at this weight were rarely struck for circulation. This piece almost certainly served a presentational or diplomatic function — exactly the kind of object being exchanged in Münster's crowded negotiating rooms that year.
