Obverse description Draped bust of Christian III facing left, with beard and laureate head, occupying the majority of the field. The king is portrayed in a Renaissance style characteristic of mid-16th century Scandinavian coinage. A Latin legend encircles the effigy reading D. G. DANO. REX. CHRISTIANVS. 3, identifying the king as Christian III, King of Denmark by the grace of God. The coin is struck on an irregular flan with the slightly uneven surfaces typical of hammered gold coinage of this period.

Additional information

Christian III's 1541 ducat issue followed directly from his consolidation of Lutheran rule in Denmark — he had defeated the Catholic opposition in the Count's War only six years earlier, imprisoned the bishops, and formally established Lutheranism as the state religion in 1536. The royal mint at this period operated under significant pressure to produce prestige gold coinage befitting a king who was actively courting Protestant alliances across northern Europe.

Hede 10 is among the rarer of the Christian III ducat types. Survivors in any meaningful grade are infrequently encountered at auction.
