Описание аверса View of the Porta Nigra, the ancient Roman city gate of Trier, depicted in the central field with the main market building, market cross, and the Church of St. Gangolf visible behind it. The municipal coat of arms of Trier is displayed in the foreground beneath the architectural scene. The surrounding legend commemorates the millennial anniversary of the city's market, with dates flanking the inscription. The design is executed in high relief in a detailed architectural and heraldic style.

Дополнительная информация

The "Aureus Magnus Trier" was part of a privately produced fantasy or restrike series circulating among German collectors in the late 1950s — it carries no legal tender status and was never authorized by the Bundesbank or any official German monetary authority. Trier's connection to Roman gold coinage is genuine enough: the city served as a major imperial mint from the late third century through the early fifth, producing aurei and solidi under Diocletian, Constantine, and their successors.

The piece occupies an awkward category that serious numismatists treat with caution — neither official issue nor ancient artifact.
