The "Aureus Magnus Trier" was part of a privately produced fantasy or restrike series circulating among German collectors in the late 1950s — it carries no legal tender status and was never authorized by the Bundesbank or any official German monetary authority. Trier's connection to Roman gold coinage is genuine enough: the city served as a major imperial mint from the late third century through the early fifth, producing aurei and solidi under Diocletian, Constantine, and their successors.
