August Wilhelm of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel was born on 8 April 1662, and birthday ducats of this kind were a firmly established court tradition among the German Protestant princes — a public display of dynastic health and fiscal confidence simultaneously. The 1730 issue marks his 68th year, struck just two years before his death in 1731, making it one of the final birthday emissions of his reign.
