Honoré II secured the title of Prince of Monaco from Spain in 1612, but by the 1640s he had switched allegiance to France — a pivot formalized in the 1641 Treaty of Péronne, which placed Monaco under French protection and effectively ended Spanish dominance over the principality. These gold doppie were struck in the immediate aftermath of that realignment, financed in part by the French subsidy that came with the new arrangement.
The doppie denomination itself follows Genoese monetary convention, reflecting Monaco's long commercial and geographic ties to the Ligurian coast rather than to either of its great-power patrons.
