Fiji has no meaningful indigenous or historical connection to koi — the fish is native to Central Asia and domesticated in Japan, where it became entangled with Zen aesthetics and later global ornamental trade. Its appearance on a Fijian issue is purely commercial, targeting the Asian bullion collector market that drove a wave of similar "koi" releases from Pacific island minting programs throughout the early 2020s. These nations function as licensing issuers, with the coins designed, struck, and distributed almost entirely by external minting houses.
