Niue has operated as a prolific bullion and commemorative issuing authority since the 1990s, leveraging its status as a New Zealand realm territory with full rights to produce legal tender coinage. The arrangement is essentially a revenue mechanism — Niue's own economy cannot absorb these issues, and the coins are produced exclusively for the international collector market. The Vytis, Lithuania's mounted knight device, has deep roots in medieval heraldry and was suppressed entirely during Soviet occupation before being restored as the national emblem upon independence in 1990.
