Part of a broad "Cities of the World" bullion-adjacent series issued through the New Zealand Mint on behalf of Solomon Islands, these coins have no functional monetary relationship to the issuing territory — the $2 face value is purely nominal, chosen to satisfy legal tender requirements while keeping the denomination low enough to avoid confusion with circulating coinage. Istanbul was selected alongside other historically layered cities partly for its cross-continental appeal in the collector market, particularly in Europe and the Middle East.
