The "Brontosaurus" name itself carries a complicated taxonomic history: the genus was synonymized with Apatosaurus in 1903 and spent the better part of a century considered invalid before a 2015 phylogenetic study by Tschopp, Mateus, and Benson formally rehabilitated it as a distinct genus.
