The right and lower portions display a mirror-polished field with a richly detailed scene of First World War naval warfare: a surfaced submarine occupies the foreground with a uniformed officer standing at the conning tower, while a warship under steam is visible in the turbulent seas behind, set against a dramatically rendered cloudscape.
