HMAS Yarra (III) was a River-class destroyer escort commissioned in 1961 and decommissioned in 1985, serving through the period of Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War including escort and patrol duties in the Far East Strategic Reserve. This coin was issued as part of the Royal Australian Mint's ongoing naval heritage program, which has produced a substantial run of commemorative silver dollars tied to individual RAN vessels — a series prolific enough that secondary market premiums rarely develop on common dates.
