Canada's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, located at the National War Memorial in Ottawa, was established in May 2000 when the remains of an unidentified Canadian soldier — exhumed from Vimy Ridge — were interred following a national ceremony attended by tens of thousands. The colourized toonie joins a small group of circulation-format bimetallics bearing selective colour application, a technique the RCM has used on commemorative issues since the late 1990s but rarely applies to the two-dollar denomination.
