The "Gonzo" designation here refers to Hunter S. Thompson's alter ego from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and Niue's licensing-driven commemorative program has made the island's name familiar to collectors entirely disconnected from the Pacific. Niue generates a meaningful share of government revenue through exactly these arrangements with foreign mints and IP holders.
Charles III's effigy appears on the obverse by standard Commonwealth obligation — his first appearances on Niue issues began replacing Elizabeth II's portrait following her death in September 2022.
