Niue has operated as a bullion and collector coin program under New Zealand's monetary umbrella since the 1990s, licensing its sovereignty to mint operators — primarily the Polish Mint in recent years — to produce legal tender issues that will never circulate on the island's population of roughly 1,500 people. The "2 Dollar" face value is purely nominal, set well below melt on the day of issue.
The frog series sits within a broader trend of shaped and colored wildlife coins that accelerated sharply after 2010 as collector markets in China and Eastern Europe expanded demand for novelty bullion.
