New Zealand's great spotted kiwi (*Apteryx haastii*) is the least-studied of the three kiwi species, restricted to higher-altitude zones of the South Island's northwest — a distribution shaped largely by predator pressure rather than habitat preference. Charles III's first portrait on New Zealand coinage follows the effigy modeled by Martin Jennings, whose work was selected after the longstanding Maklouf portrait of Elizabeth II was retired upon her death in September 2022. The transition to a new monarch required simultaneous reissues across the entire Commonwealth coinage program.
