| Reverse description | A vibrantly colored depiction of a Roroa (Great Spotted Kiwi), Apteryx maxima, shown foraging in the foreground with its long bill angled toward the ground, its richly textured plumage rendered in naturalistic detail. A mountainous New Zealand landscape occupies the background, evoking the bird's native alpine habitat. The species name ROROA GREAT SPOTTED KIWI arcs across the upper portion of the design, with the scientific designation Apteryx maxima inscribed below it. The denomination TWO DOLLARS appears along the lower periphery in Latin lettering. |

| Additional information |
New Zealand's great spotted kiwi (*Apteryx haastii*) is the least-studied of the three kiwi species, restricted to higher-altitude zones of the South Island's northwest — a distribution shaped largely by predator pressure rather than habitat preference. Charles III's first portrait on New Zealand coinage follows the effigy modeled by Martin Jennings, whose work was selected after the longstanding Maklouf portrait of Elizabeth II was retired upon her death in September 2022. The transition to a new monarch required simultaneous reissues across the entire Commonwealth coinage program.
