The outer margin bears a continuous invocation of blessings upon the Twelve Imams of Twelver Shia Islam, naming each from Ali through al-Hasan al-Askari and concluding with Muhammad al-Mahdi, reflecting Uljaytu Khan's adoption of Shia Islam circa 1309. The legends are executed in a calligraphic Naskh-style Arabic script typical of Ilkhanid monetary production.
