| Obverse description | Within a double circle, the Shahada is inscribed in Arabic: 'There is no God but Allah, Muhammad is the Apostle of Allah,' followed by the Shia declaration 'Ali is the vicegerent of God,' with the Basmala 'In the name of God, the Holy' arranged around the central field. The outer margin bears a continuous invocation of blessings upon the Twelve Imams of Twelver Shia Islam, naming each from Ali through al-Hasan al-Askari and concluding with Muhammad al-Mahdi, reflecting Uljaytu Khan's adoption of Shia Islam circa 1309. The legends are executed in a calligraphic Naskh-style Arabic script typical of Ilkhanid monetary production. The overall layout is characteristic of the Type B issue, distinguished by the inclusion of the full Twelver Imam list in the marginal legend. |
