Taghay Timur was one of the last Ilkhans to exercise anything resembling real authority, ruling a Mongol successor state that was visibly fracturing under rival warlords. The Tustar mint — ancient Shustar in Khuzestan — continued striking coin through this period largely out of administrative inertia; provincial governors needed a medium of exchange whether or not Mongol central power was coherent. By the time of his assassination in 1353, the Ilkhanate had effectively ceased to function as a unified polity.
