Obverse description Within a beaded border, a large crowned royal cipher 'L' occupies the center of the field, flanked by the divided date '16' and '70' on either side. A crowned open royal crown surmounts the monogram, rendered in a bold, decorative style characteristic of the early Louis XIV period. The mint mark letter 'A' (Paris) appears below the cipher. The circular legend reads LVDOVICVS XIIII D GR FRAN ET NAV REX, identifying Louis XIV as King of France and Navarre by the Grace of God.
