| Obverse description | Central field features the crowned Portuguese royal arms — the quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross) within a bordered shield, surmounted by a floral crown. The mint marks L and B flank the shield on the left and right respectively, denoting the Lisbon mint. A beaded inner circle surrounds the central device, with the royal legend disposed in the outer field. The die-struck lettering is characteristic of the late sixteenth-century Portuguese hammered gold coinage, with the irregular flan typical of the period. |
