Additional information

Trial strikes for Costa Rican commemoratives from this period were produced to test planchet quality and die alignment before authorizing full production runs. The 1970 issue marked two decades of the Banco Central, founded in 1950 following the nationalization of Costa Rica's banking system under Figueres — a politically charged restructuring that consolidated monetary authority away from private banks. Whether this reverse trial ever advanced to an approved strike is the more interesting question the piece poses.
