Liberia's 1890 pattern series was produced experimentally as the republic evaluated coinage designs ahead of formal circulation issues. The X#Pn8 designation places this piece firmly outside regular coinage, struck in limited numbers almost certainly at a U.S. facility — Liberian coinage of this period was produced by American mints and private contractors, given the country's founding ties to the American Colonization Society.
Pattern survivorship for Liberian issues of this decade is poorly documented, and confirmed examples rarely surface in commerce.
